Road to Revelation: Genesis - Creation to the Fall

I'm starting a new series on the blog based on notes I've made for my bible study brosephs.  We are wanting to study the book of Revelation but in starting to prepare for teaching that book it was revealed (get it?) to me that in order to understand one of the Bible's more mysterious books we would need to get our heads around the Old Testament as John references it sooooo much in his final writings.

And so it begins...

Genesis 1 - 5

Creation: God created the world and brought order out of the chaos. When He had finished all was good and peaceful so He rested on the 7th day.  Key Verse: Genesis 1:31 “God saw all that he had made, and it was very good…”

The Fall: Man disobeyed God and was sent out of the good garden.  God gave man the consequences for his actions—sin and death now reign over him and life will be hard because the world is now broken (ch. 3:16-19).  Nevertheless there is hope for mankind!  A promise was given to the serpent: that although he will try to destroy mankind, one of Eve’s descendents will triumph over him.  Key Verse: Genesis 3:15

Extra Reading: Genesis 2:6-17.  God created man and placed him in a garden filled with life and in particular two trees; the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.  When man sinned by eating from the tree of knowledge the tree of life was taken from him.  But the tree of life is returned in the final chapter of the story [because of Christ’s obedience]—see Revelation 21:1-3 and it will never be taken away again and all will be good again.

Proof of the Fall: Cain and Abel's conflict and Abel's murder then a list of people dying (Genesis 4-5)

Takeaway: Things are not good anymore but fear not!  God has a plan…
